Call for Papers: Promoting Democracy and the Rule of Law – Global Perspectives
Universidad de Chile (Santiago de Chile), 5th- 6th December 2024
The Instituto de Estudios Internacionales (IEI) of the University of Chile, in association with the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), kindly invites you to submit an Abstract for our first EU-VALUES International Conference.
This interdisciplinary conference seeks to explore strategies to promote democracy and the rule of law within various institutional frameworks and policy environments from a comparative perspective.
Conference Themes
Faced with recent challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and growing geopolitical tensions, many democratic countries are adapting its foreign policy and strategic outlook to the new environment. This adaptation includes revising existing strategies and developing new, agile approaches to address sudden threats and uphold democratic principles. Against this backdrop, the conference aims to critically discuss new approaches to safeguard and advance democratic core values as human dignity, freedom, equality, rule of law, or human rights, both domestically and internationally.
The conference aims to explore how values related to democracy and the rule of law are promoted worldwide by national states and international organizations and to discuss the impact of related strategies and instruments. More specifically, the conference will examine how strategies to promote democracy and the rule of law are implemented globally and how principles advanced by the EU are evaluated in different parts of the world. A special section will be dedicated to EU – Latin America cooperation in the promotion of democracy and the rule of law.
Paper proposals can fit within, but are not limited to, the following topic areas:
• Democratic Values Challenged by New Security Policy Ideas
• Promoting Democracy and Gender Politics from a Global Perspective
